The short version: Owens Corning Duration Series shingles can now qualify for a limited wind warranty of up to 160 mph, up from 130 mph. To get it, the shingles have to go on with specific Owens Corning system parts. Owens Corning announced the change on August 1, 2026.
What changed
For years, Duration shingles carried a limited wind warranty of up to 130 mph. Owens Corning now offers up to 160 mph on every shingle in the Duration Series when the roof is built as part of its Total Protection Roofing System. Owens Corning only requires its standard four-nail pattern, using the wide SureNail nailing strip that Duration shingles are known for. On our roofs, every shingle gets six nails, because New Orleans is a high-wind area and the extra hold is worth it.
What your roof needs to qualify
The 160 mph warranty applies when Duration shingles are installed with these Owens Corning components:
- Hip and ridge shingles along every hip and ridge
- Underlayment over the roof deck
- Starter shingles on the eaves and up the rakes, the edges where wind gets under a roof first
- One more qualifying part: either Owens Corning ice and water barrier or an Owens Corning ventilation product
Owens Corning notes that its system excludes non-Owens Corning items like flashing, fasteners, pipe boots and wood decking. If a roof has Duration shingles but not the full set of components, the existing warranty of up to 130 mph still applies when its own requirements are met.
Why it matters in New Orleans
Hurricane Ida came ashore in 2021 with winds of about 150 mph, and every few years another storm tests the roofs across the metro area. Wind damage to a shingle roof almost always starts at the edges and the ridge, where gusts can lift a shingle and peel it back. The 160 mph requirements focus on exactly those spots: starter shingles sealed along the eaves and rakes, and hip and ridge caps designed to match the shingle.
A higher warranty number does not make any roof storm-proof, and it is not a promise about your insurance. It is a stronger manufacturer warranty on the shingles, with conditions and exclusions, and it rewards a roof that is built as a complete system rather than shingles over whatever parts were cheapest.
What about Oakridge shingles?
We install both Owens Corning Oakridge and Duration. This change covers the Duration Series only; Oakridge keeps its existing wind warranty. Oakridge is still a solid, budget-friendly architectural shingle. If wind protection is a priority for you, Duration with the full system is now the stronger choice, and your estimate can show both side by side. Other shingle brands can be quoted on request.
How we handle it
On Duration roofs we install the Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System, and every quote we write lists the Owens Corning approved products going on your roof, three or more on every job, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. When the roof is done, we register your Owens Corning warranty in your name and send you the registration. That is on top of our own 5-year workmanship warranty, which transfers to a new owner at no cost.
If you already have a Duration roof, the parts installed and the date of installation decide which warranty you have. Call us and we can check what was used on your job.
